Clara Qiyun Zhao

A special performer and violist, Clara Qiyun is a graduate of Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler and University of Art Berlin, currently pursuing doctorate study with Atar Arad at the IU Jacobs School of Music in Indiana.

As the first-prize winner of the International Knopf Competition Germany, Euterpe International Competition Italy, France National Music Competition, American Great Composers Competition, and Doublestop Foundation Competition New York, she performed in concerts as a soloist and chamber musician at the Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Berliner Philharmonie, and Berlin Konzerthaus etc. She was the youngest principal violist of the China Philharmonic and Shanghai Philharmonic. She is the recipient of instrumental awards and scholarships from the Deutsche Musikleben Stiftung, Ritter Stiftung Hamburg, Viola Stiftung Walter Witte, and Beare’s International Violin Society, as well as the China National Award for Exceptional Artists. Her principal teachers include Atar Arad, Paul Neubauer, Yuri Bashmet, Gunter Teuffel, Walter Kuessner. As a chamber musician and contemporary music specialist, she studied exclusively with Shmuel Ashkenasi and Garth Knox. She plays a Wolfgang Scharff viola, supported by the Viola Stiftung Walter Witte.
