Griffon String Quartet Launches Inaugural Winter Strings Retreat

The 2023 Winter Strings Retreat features the Suzuki Strings of Madison and the Griffon’s lesson program students from Green Bay and Door County.

The Griffon String Quartet’s founding mission of providing music education to youth and underserved children in northeast Wisconsin is the pivotal catalyst for launching its long-awaited endeavor of hosting the inaugural Winter Retreat for students studying violin, viola, and cello.

During the first week of 2023, the Griffon’s Winter Retreat will feature the Suzuki Strings of Madison, a group that provides Madison children with the opportunity to flourish musically using the philosophy of Shinichi Suzuki, a Japanese pedagogue who believed that every child can learn to play an instrument with loving encouragement, a rich musical environment, and respectful cooperation between teacher, parent, and student.

Suzuki Strings of Madison will present a private concert for more than 140 students in third through sixth grades at Gibraltar School in Fish Creek on the morning of January 6. A stimulating workshop for 33 fifth grade students follows, including performances by Griffon violinist Roy Meyer and solo students from Suzuki Strings of Madison. A captivating instrument petting zoo will allow the Gibraltar students an excellent opportunity to touch and experiment with violins, violas, and cellos under the supervision and guidance of professional musicians.

Later the same day, Suzuki Strings of Madison students, Griffon students, and community members will gather at Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church in Ellison Bay, WI, for a fun afternoon of music games and a play-in, plus a pizza dinner party for the students.

On the morning of January 7, 2023, at Shepherd of the Bay, the retreat will feature instructive performance classes for students, followed by titillating student performances. Both events will be open to the public. Door County pianist Sara Bong will accompany the musicians.

The Griffon String Quartet residency – established by Midsummer’s Music in 2018 – has become a role model for similar programs nationally. Future Griffon Winter Retreats are expected to attract other student strings groups to Door County from across the country.

Griffon String Quartet members currently work with children in northeast Wisconsin via the Einstein Series, a highly interactive program for school-age children. Students participate in private or group lessons or educational outreach programs. The quartet visits schools and classrooms to perform and discuss string quartet music, relating it specifically to relevant topics in their studies and their lives.

One of the most vibrant and engaging quartets of their generation, the Griffon String Quartet was formed in the fall of 2018 as a collaboration between Midsummer’s Music and the Fine Arts Institute at East High in Green Bay. The GSQ is a groundbreaking project to enrich the lives of children and adults throughout Northeast Wisconsin through concerts, workshops, and music education outreach. Extraordinary musicians who have performed with orchestras and ensembles around the globe, they are equally dedicated to music education and inspiring the next generation of music lovers. Each member of the Griffon String Quartet has advanced degrees and significant professional experience, both as educators and performers, and they have been recognized for “their youthful vigor, which is absolutely infectious!”

Midsummer’s Music was co-founded in 1990 by Jim and Jean Berkenstock, long-time Door County summer residents and principal orchestral players with the Lyric Opera of Chicago. What began as two concerts among friends has become one of the Midwest’s most anticipated chamber music series, bringing thousands of chamber music enthusiasts from around the globe to the magical Door County Peninsula.
