Griffon String Quartet founding member Roy Meyer will be the featured solo violinist at two all-Bach concerts in Door County on Sunday, December 11.
Roy began violin studies at four years old with Kyoko Fuller at the American Suzuki Talent Education Center (ASTEC) in Stevens Point, WI. He went on to pursue a Bachelor of Music in violin performance at UW–Madison and continued his education earning a Masters of Music at University of South Florida in Tampa, FL. At New York University, he pursued a certificate in advance string studies before settling in Chicago. With an especially passionate nature for orchestral repertoire, Roy has been Concertmaster of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra since 2015 and is a frequent substitute violinist with the Sarasota Orchestra and the Chicago Philharmonic. As a chamber musician, he enjoys maintaining musical relationships with friends and performing at the Apollo Music Festival in Houston, MN, and at the Illinois Chamber Music Festival in Bloomington, IL. Film credits include Amazon Prime’s Mozart in the Jungle.
Roy, who is instrumental in the renewed growth and expanded outreach of the Griffon String Quartet, now calls Green Bay home. Through the Griffon, he currently provides one-on-one instruction to more than two dozen string students in northeast Wisconsin.
The first of the two concerts begins at 11:00am at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Ephraim, and the second begins at 3:00pm at Christ the King Holy Nativity Episcopal Church in Sturgeon Bay. Neither concert is ticketed, and seating will be on a first come, first served basis.
One of the most vibrant and engaging quartets of their generation, the Griffon String Quartet was formed in the fall of 2018 as a collaboration between Midsummer’s Music and the Fine Arts Institute at East High in Green Bay. The GSQ is a groundbreaking project to enrich the lives of children and adults throughout Northeast Wisconsin through concerts, workshops, and music education outreach. Extraordinary musicians who have performed with orchestras and ensembles around the globe, they are equally dedicated to music education and inspiring the next generation of music lovers. Each member of the Griffon String Quartet has advanced degrees and significant professional experience, both as educators and performers, and they have been recognized for “their youthful vigor, which is absolutely infectious!”
Midsummer’s Music was co-founded in 1990 by Jim and Jean Berkenstock, long-time Door County summer residents and principal orchestral players with the Lyric Opera of Chicago. What began as two concerts among friends has become one of the Midwest’s most anticipated chamber music series, bringing thousands of chamber music enthusiasts from around the globe to the magical Door County Peninsula.
