Midsummer’s Music Opening Night Features ‘Unknown Greats’

Wisconsin Public Radio’s Norman Gilliland is the honored guest host for this concert that is dedicated to the memory of Karl Klug.

Sister Bay, Wis. – May 27, 2022 – Midsummer’s Music, whose concerts have been hailed as “exciting, pulse-pounding, and riveting,” will present its 32nd season of performances starting June 9. This year features works by Schubert, Franck, Raff, Mozart, and Brahms – all intimately performed in beautiful Door County venues from Sturgeon Bay to Ellison Bay – plus discoveries from Dame Ethyl Smyth, Louise Farrenc, and Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson.

Always a special celebration, the 2022 opening night is dedicated to the memory of Karl Klug and will be at 7:00pm, June 9, at Egg Harbor’s Donald & Carol Kress Pavilion. Wisconsin Public Radio’s musically knowledgeable and charismatic Norman Gilliland will welcome concertgoers to the season’s premiere performance commemorating the 200th birthdays of Friedrich Kiel and Joachim Raff. Considered truly great chamber music composers of their time, over the years they have become far lesser known than household names like Beethoven, Brahms, and Mozart. The concert features Kiel’s lively Quartet No. 3 in G Minor, Op. 50, and Raff’s dramatic Quartet No. 2 in C Minor. Op. 202, masterfully performed by David Perry, violin, Sally Chisholm, viola, James Waldo, cello, and Jeannie Yu, piano.

A post-concert reception allows concertgoers to mingle with the musicians. This thrilling program will repeat at Björklunden in Baileys Harbor at 7:00pm on June 11; as a 3:00pm matinée at Hope United Church of Christ in Sturgeon Bay on June 12; and at 7:00pm on June 14 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Sister Bay.

A complete 2022 summer brochure can be downloaded at www.midsummersmusic.com.

Opening night tickets are $75 for adults and $25 for students. Tickets for regular concerts are $35 for adults, $15 for students, and children 12 and under are free. Premium prices apply for salon/home concerts, dinner concerts and other special events. Flex-packs of six tickets for the price of five tickets are also available. Tickets can be ordered at www.midsummersmusic.com or by phone at 920-854-7088.

Midsummer’s Music was co-founded in 1990 by Jim and Jean Berkenstock, long-time Door County summer residents and principal orchestral players with the Lyric Opera of Chicago. What began as two concerts among friends has become one of the Midwest’s most anticipated chamber music series, bringing thousands of chamber music enthusiasts from around the globe to the magical Door County Peninsula.
