SUMMARY:Early to Moderate Stages of Dementia • Sturgeon Bay
DESCRIPTION:Musical Museum \nMidsummer’s Music and Third Avenue PlayWorks in Sturgeon Bay will host Clara Takarabe\, violist and clinical music researcher with the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University\, for a series of clinical music performances and talks throughout Door County. The Musical Museum is a dementia-informed life-enrichment program featuring musical performances by Takarabe and the Griffon String Quartet intertwined with commentary and discussion around sound\, music and poetry. The program takes care to acknowledge intellectual and social needs of this stage of life. \n“Third Avenue PlayWorks is thrilled to collaborate with Midsummer’s Music and the Griffon String Quartet to host Clara Takarabe for this incredible series of events\,” said Jacob Janssen\, the Jackie & Steve Kane Artistic Director of Third Avenue PlayWorks. “We have long intuited the healing power of music and art\, but Clara’s research at Northwestern University is proving the scientific efficacy of music in the healing process. We honored to be one of the hosts for her work here in Door County.” \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nPrograms are funded in part by grants from the Little Eddie Big Cup\, Greater Green Bay Community Foundation\, Wisconsin Arts Board\, Wisconsin Public Service\, and Destination Door County.

SUMMARY:Beethoven Septet • Woodwalk Gallery\, Egg Harbor
DESCRIPTION:Immediately before he wrote his First Symphony\, Beethoven wrote this Septet as a prototype or practice run. He was so ready for the nine symphonies that followed that this Septet became his most popular piece during his lifetime. You could almost call it his Tenth Symphony. Thrill to the full symphonic sound of this work and the Ireland Sextet that precedes it. J.J. Koh (clarinet)\, Judith Farmer (bassoon)\, and Fritz Foss (horn) join our string section led so expertly by David Perry. John Ireland’s colorful and dramatic Sextet for Clarinet\, Horn\, and Strings\, probably inspired by the Beethoven\, is a neglected masterpiece. It’s romantic English charm and colorful and dramatic scoring will make you happy you’ve discovered it. \nSextet (1898) • John Ireland\nClarinet\, Horn\, and String Quartet \nSeptet in E-flat Major\, Op. 20 • Ludwig van Beethoven\nClarinet\, Bassoon\, Horn\, Violin\, Viola\, Cello\, and Bass \n\nMusicians\nJJ Koh\, Clarinet\nFritz Foss\, Horn\nJudith Farmer\, Bassoon\nDavid Perry & Ann Palen\, Violin\nSally Chisholm\, Viola\nCole Randolph\, Cello\nJeremy Attanaseo\, Bass \nSponsored by Sandy Zingler \nThe 2024 Season is sponsored by the Jean Berkenstock Family Fund and the Susan DeWitt Davie Legacy Fund.

SUMMARY:Bruch and Brahms • Hope UCC\, Sturgeon Bay
DESCRIPTION:When Brahms wrote his second string quintet\, he thought it was a perfect way to end his career (he later was coaxed into creating a few more by a wonderful clarinetist). It is powerful\, charming\, intense\, light-hearted\, and – especially in its Hungarian flavored finale – exuberant. When someone suggested that the famous Prater in Vienna\, a favorite amusement park of Brahms\, might have inspired the effervescent nature of this work\, Brahms replied\, “Yes\, and the delightful girls there\, too.” Bruch’s masterpiece is also a late work not published until after his death. This composer of the famous Scottish Fantasy and Violin Concerto excels once again in this deeply felt companion piece to the Brahms. A rare opportunity to hear both of these sumptuous romantic string masterpieces together. \nQuartet in D Major\, Op. 11\, No. 1 (1795) • Adalbert Gyrowetz\nFlute\, Violin\, Viola\, and Cello \nQuintet in E-flat Major (1918)\, Op. Posthumous • Max Bruch\nTwo Violins\, Two Violas\, and Cello \nQuintet No. 2 in G Major\, Op. 111 • Johannes Brahms\nTwo Violins\, Two Violas\, and Cello \nWrite On\, Door County poet Stephanie Trenchard will present a poem based on one of the pieces of music. \n\nMusicians\nHeather Zinninger\, Flute\nDavid Perry\, Suzanne Beia & Ann Palen\, Violin\nAllyson Fleck & Catherine Lynn\, Viola\nPaula Kosower\, Cello \nSponsored by Sandy Zingler \nThe 2024 Season is sponsored by the Jean Berkenstock Family Fund and the Susan DeWitt Davie Legacy Fund.
