SUMMARY:Poetry & Music • Write On\, Door County\, Fish Creek
DESCRIPTION:FEATHER ROUSING: An Afternoon of Reading and Music with Rebecca Meacham and the Griffon String Quartet \nJoin us for an afternoon of reading and music celebrating the publication of former Write On resident Rebecca Meacham’s latest collection\, Feather Rousing. The title piece of the collection was the result of a 2018 Poetry Meets Music with Midsummer’s Music. Rebecca created the piece in response to music by Charles-Valentin Allkan. We are delighted to have the Midsummer’s Griffon String Quartet join us to interlace music and writing at this celebration. The event is free and open to the public. A light reception will follow. \nAbout the Author: \nRebecca Meacham’s short story collection\, Let’s Do\, won UNT Press’s Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Fiction\, and her flash fiction collection\, Morbid Curiosities\, won the New Delta Review chapbook prize. Her work has appeared most recently in Best Microfiction 2021\, Wigleaf\, Had\, and Gigantic Sequins\, and her prose has been set to music\, translated into Polish\, and carved into woodblocks and letter-pressed by steamroller. She is a professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay\, where she directs The Teaching Press and chairs the BFA in Writing and Applied Arts program. Her chapbook\, Feather Rousing\, is published this spring by Black Lawrence Press. \nAbout the Book: \nIn this “hybridiary” of historical fiction and personal memoir\, we peer inside baby incubators at Coney Island\, waiting for childhood to take wing. We overhear the dying dreams of the Imperial Romanov family\, and we fret the simple act of watching a child walk to class. Hope is a bright and constant thread: a tornado cuts a tender swath; a lady bides time inside a tiger’s claws; teenagers preen on screens during pandemic lockdown. Rescues are fumbled but perpetually launched—and love is a gift the way the sun is a gift: constant and consoling\, but also blinding\, near-obliterating. Tragic\, funny\, and surreal\, FEATHER ROUSING nests in the spaces between caretaking and grief\, secret and spectacle\, recollection and imagination\, global anguish and private joy. \n“This ineffable collection reads like sadness\, like music\, like poetry\, like instinct\, like mothers and children and the heart beating right out of your chest. I adored it!” —Amber Sparks\, author of And I Do Not Forgive You \nAbout the Griffon String Quartet: \nThe Griffon String Quartet is a full-time professional string quartet from September through May and resides in northeastern Wisconsin. Actively embedded in the community\, the Quartet works with all ages to enhance lives through the power and beauty of music. \nWrite On\, Door County website link.

SUMMARY:Coffee Talk: The Healing Power of Sound with Maja Jurisic\, MD
DESCRIPTION:Coffee Talks are free\, engaging\, informal lectures on music topics by MM ensemble members\, staff\, and friends. \nFrom time immemorial\, people have intuitively felt that sound promotes healing. For centuries\, chants\, songs\, and various instruments have been used to restore harmony of body\, mind and spirit. Nowadays\, Midsummer’s Music lovers have experienced the health-promoting frequencies of glorious music every time they’ve attended a concert. \nScience is finally providing evidence for this intuition. Physicists have shown that everything is in a state of vibration\, including our bodies. Albert Einstein wrote\, “We are slowed down sound and light waves\, a walking bundle of frequencies tuned to the cosmos.” \nVibrations passing through matter in the form of waves are what we experience as sound. Even frequencies that are too high or low for the human ear are registered as vibrations in our bodies. We pick up audible and inaudible sounds all the way down to a cellular level. Researchers at Columbia found that cilia (antenna-like structures on our cell membranes) quiver like tuning forks\, and vibrations in the environment (sounds) cause the cells to change shape. This has been linked to conditions as wide-ranging as arthritis\, heart failure and cancer. Sound medicine is being incorporated into services provided by an increasing number of hospitals\, such as the Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins. \nDr. Maja has long believed that the mechanistic model of health she learned in medical school is too narrow. She has found that sound offers a pathway to inner balance that is accessible to everyone and loves to share the science and art of sound healing. \nExperience this for yourself as she plays her crystal alchemy singing bowls. And since breath is the language of the body\, learn how to use yours to change your physiologic state (it’s like a superpower you never knew you had). Be ready for some fun toning with the bowls and retune\, refresh and restore body\, mind and spirit as your cells respond to the resonant frequencies of the sounds. Leave feeling reconnected with joy and wonder. \nSeating is limited. Please reserve your free tickets.

SUMMARY:Dvořák and Brahms • St. Luke's\, Sister Bay
DESCRIPTION:Dvořák and Brahms—two great 19th century composers who gave us splendid piano quintets. However\, the Dvořák Quintet is one you may not have heard before. He was 31 when he wrote it\, but then decided to revise it in 1887 at the height of his career. Unfortunately\, this version was not heard until 1922\, 18 years after Dvořák’s death. Here is a chance to savor this rare masterpiece coupled with one of Brahms’ best chamber works in the talented hands of pianist Jeannie Yu\, in collaboration with violinist David Perry and his fellow string players. \nQuintet No. 1 in A Major\, Op. 5 • Antonín Dvořák\nPiano and String Quartet \nQuintet in F Minor\, Op. 34 • Johannes Brahms\nPiano and String Quartet \nMusicians\nJeannie Yu\, Piano\nDavid Perry & Ann Palen\, Violin\nAllyson Fleck\, Viola\nMara McClain\, Cello \nSponsored by the Nancy T. and David A.
