SUMMARY:Beethoven Septet • Woodwalk Gallery\, Egg Harbor
DESCRIPTION:Immediately before he wrote his First Symphony\, Beethoven wrote this Septet as a prototype or practice run. He was so ready for the nine symphonies that followed that this Septet became his most popular piece during his lifetime. You could almost call it his Tenth Symphony. Thrill to the full symphonic sound of this work and the Ireland Sextet that precedes it. J.J. Koh (clarinet)\, Judith Farmer (bassoon)\, and Fritz Foss (horn) join our string section led so expertly by David Perry. John Ireland’s colorful and dramatic Sextet for Clarinet\, Horn\, and Strings\, probably inspired by the Beethoven\, is a neglected masterpiece. It’s romantic English charm and colorful and dramatic scoring will make you happy you’ve discovered it. \nSextet (1898) • John Ireland\nClarinet\, Horn\, and String Quartet \nSeptet in E-flat Major\, Op. 20 • Ludwig van Beethoven\nClarinet\, Bassoon\, Horn\, Violin\, Viola\, Cello\, and Bass \n\nMusicians\nJJ Koh\, Clarinet\nFritz Foss\, Horn\nJudith Farmer\, Bassoon\nDavid Perry & Ann Palen\, Violin\nSally Chisholm\, Viola\nCole Randolph\, Cello\nJeremy Attanaseo\, Bass \nSponsored by Sandy Zingler \nThe 2024 Season is sponsored by the Jean Berkenstock Family Fund and the Susan DeWitt Davie Legacy Fund.

SUMMARY:Romance and Rapture • The Clearing Folk School\, Ellison Bay

Nineteenth century Hungarian icon Ernst von Dohnanyi fled the Nazis and then the communists before emigrating to the U.S. A virtuoso pianist and composer\, his Sextet is poignant and exhilarating in its cosmopolitan alure. \nObsidian\, rippled moonlight\, gleams (2019) • Sakari Dixon Vanderveer\nPiano and String Quartet \nQuartet No. 2 in D Major\, Op. 124 • Mélanie Bonis\nPiano\, Violin\, Viola\, and Cello \nSextet in C Major\, Op. 37 (1935) • Ernst von Dohnányi\nClarinet\, Horn\, Violin\, Viola\, Cello\, and Piano \n\nMusicians\nJJ Koh\, Clarinet\nFritz Foss\, Horn\nJeannie Yu\, Piano\nDavid Perry & Ann Palen\, Violin\nAllyson Fleck\, Viola\nCole Randolph\, Cello \nSponsored by Michael Elkow \nThe Women’s Fund of Door County is a supporting sponsor for this program in acknowledgment of the women musicians performing. \nThe 2024 Season is sponsored by the Jean Berkenstock Family Fund and the Susan DeWitt Davie Legacy Fund.

SUMMARY:Bruch and Brahms • Hope UCC\, Sturgeon Bay
DESCRIPTION:When Brahms wrote his second string quintet\, he thought it was a perfect way to end his career (he later was coaxed into creating a few more by a wonderful clarinetist). It is powerful\, charming\, intense\, light-hearted\, and – especially in its Hungarian flavored finale – exuberant. When someone suggested that the famous Prater in Vienna\, a favorite amusement park of Brahms\, might have inspired the effervescent nature of this work\, Brahms replied\, “Yes\, and the delightful girls there\, too.” Bruch’s masterpiece is also a late work not published until after his death. This composer of the famous Scottish Fantasy and Violin Concerto excels once again in this deeply felt companion piece to the Brahms. A rare opportunity to hear both of these sumptuous romantic string masterpieces together. \nQuartet in D Major\, Op. 11\, No. 1 (1795) • Adalbert Gyrowetz\nFlute\, Violin\, Viola\, and Cello \nQuintet in E-flat Major (1918)\, Op. Posthumous • Max Bruch\nTwo Violins\, Two Violas\, and Cello \nQuintet No. 2 in G Major\, Op. 111 • Johannes Brahms\nTwo Violins\, Two Violas\, and Cello \nWrite On\, Door County poet Stephanie Trenchard will present a poem based on one of the pieces of music. \n\nMusicians\nHeather Zinninger\, Flute\nDavid Perry\, Suzanne Beia & Ann Palen\, Violin\nAllyson Fleck & Catherine Lynn\, Viola\nPaula Kosower\, Cello \nSponsored by Sandy Zingler \nThe 2024 Season is sponsored by the Jean Berkenstock Family Fund and the Susan DeWitt Davie Legacy Fund.

\nYou’ll find this custom manor\, which boasts an ample concert space\, tucked cozily into the woods. A porch leads to a large deck\, where you can enjoy nature in a beautiful setting. 111 • Johannes Brahms\nTwo Violins\, Two Violas\, and Cello \n\nMusicians\nHeather Zinninger\, Flute\nDavid Perry\, Suzanne Beia & Ann Palen\, Violin\nAllyson Fleck & Catherine Lynn\, Viola\nPaula Kosower\, Cello \nSponsored by Gretchen Courtney & Ed Reschka\nSupporting Sponsor Nicolet Bank \nThe 2024 Season is sponsored by the Jean Berkenstock Family Fund and the Susan DeWitt Davie Legacy Fund.

SUMMARY:Grieg Piano Concerto and Jeannie Yu • Muse\, Sturgeon Bay
DESCRIPTION:After her triumphant performances last season of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto\, Jeannie returns this season to offer Grieg’s magnificent romantic treasure. We’ve discovered a stunningly beautiful arrangement with string quartet that will feature Jeannie in all her radiance. Puccini’s hauntingly beautiful Crisantemi opens the program followed by Emilie Mayer’s G Minor String Quartet. Of the seven quartets she wrote\, it is the only one published in her lifetime. Her introduction of a Bach Chorale melody into the slow movement is spine tingling and will make you crave more from her. \nCrisantemi • Giacomo Puccini\nString Quartet \nQuartet in G Minor\, Op. 14 (1860) • Emilie Mayer\nString Quartet \nConcerto in A Minor\, Op. 16 [Per Tengstrand\, arr.] • Edvard Grieg\nPiano and String Quartet \n\nMusicians\nJeannie Yu\, Piano\nDavid Perry\, Dawn Wohn\, and Sahada Buckley\, Violin\nAllyson Fleck\, Viola\nPaula Kosower\, Cello \nEgg Harbor artists Angela Lensch and Tony Bessen\, who participated in MM’s 2020 artistic violins project with a stunning mosaic-covered instrument\, have created a new work of art that was inspired by one of the pieces of music from the Grieg Piano Concerto concert. Is it Giacomo Puccini’s Crisantemi\, Emilie Mayer’s Quartet in G Minor\, or Edvard Grieg’s Concerto that served as the inspiration? Angela and Tony don’t know which piece they heard\, and concertgoers won’t know until the unveiling! \nSponsored by the Anne & Richard Egan Charitable Fund \nThe Women’s Fund of Door County is a supporting sponsor for this program in acknowledgment of the women musicians performing. \nThe 2024 Season is sponsored by the Jean Berkenstock Family Fund and the Susan DeWitt Davie Legacy Fund.

SUMMARY:Bastille Day Celebration: Join the party at each concert! • Woodwalk Gallery\, Egg Harbor
DESCRIPTION:Join us to toast French independence. Each of our three works represents a different vision of France\, so we are going to sample different French wines that complement their paired musical work. D’Indy brings us a French postcard painted by harp\, flute\, and strings. Bordes uses flute (played by Heather Zinninger) and strings to transport us to the Basque region\, and Claude Debussy enchants us with an impressionistic vision straight from the Louvre with his evocative String Quartet. Sommelier Jay Hutchinson shares some of his favorite appellations for this special occasion at three of our four concerts in this program. \n\nOptional “Bastille Day Pairing Concert” – A tasting of three wines will be interpolated in the program. Sommelier Jay Hutchinson will offer verbal commentary on the wines\, explaining why they were selected and drawing connections to the music. Wines might be paired based on shared historical\, cultural\, regional\, or geographic connections\, or interpretive connections based on the style\, tone\, or timbre of a given composer or composition. For example\, the Bastille Day program invites an all-French wine list; The program would open with Champagne or Crémant de Bourgogne served as the audience finds their seats and enjoyed alongside d’Indy’s Suite des parties. An additional $20 for anyone participating in the wine pairing experience. Must be 21 or older.\n\nSuite en parties\, Op. 91 (1927) • Vincent d’Indy\nFlute\, Violin\, Viola\, Cello\, and Harp \nSuite Basque\, Op. 6 (1901) • Charles Bordes\nFlute and String Quartet \nQuartet in G Minor\, Op. 10 • Claude Debussy\nString Quartet \n\nMusicians\nHeather Zinninger\, Flute\nRebecca Royce\, Harp\nDavid Perry & Eleanor Bartsch\, Violin\nAllyson Fleck\, Viola\nMara McClain\, Cello \nSponsored by Beverly Ann & Peter Conroy \nThe 2024 Season is sponsored by the Jean Berkenstock Family Fund and the Susan DeWitt Davie Legacy Fund.

SUMMARY:Bastille Day Celebration: Join the party at each concert! • Kress Pavilion\, Egg Harbor
10 • Claude Debussy\nString Quartet \nMusicians\nHeather Zinninger\, Flute\nRebecca Royce\, Harp\nDavid Perry & Eleanor Bartsch\, Violin\nAllyson Fleck\, Viola\nMara McClain\, Cello \nSponsored by Arlene Johnson & Chris Weidenbacher \nThe 2024 Season is sponsored by the Jean Berkenstock Family Fund and the Susan DeWitt Davie Legacy Fund.

SUMMARY:Beethoven\, Haydn\, and Schumann: Fairy Tales and Ghosts • Hope UCC\, Sturgeon Bay
DESCRIPTION:Engage your imagination in the magic of music by three greats: Schumann\, Haydn\, and Beethoven. Schumann’s “Fairy Tales” is written for the same combination as Mozart’s “Kegelstatt Trio” (clarinet\, viola\, and piano) and is one of Schumann’s final compositions. He thought listeners would find it “highly romantic.” Beethoven’s “Ghost” gets its name from the haunted sound of the piano’s soft tremolando that underlies parts of the slow movement. Haydn’s Trio in C Major is not so scary\, but its intensity and flair may leave you breathless. Written during his second visit to London\, it is one of his last and best trios in a genre he pretty much invented. Three masterworks all. \nMärchenerzählungen (Fairy Tales)\, Op. 132 • Robert Schumann\nClarinet\, Viola\, and Piano \nTrio in C Major\, Hob. XV:27 • Franz Josef Haydn\nPiano\, Violin\, and Cello \nTrio No. 5 in D Major\, Op. 70\, No. 1 (“Ghost”) • Ludwig van Beethoven\nPiano\, Violin\, and Cello \nWrite On\, Door County poet Albert DeGenova will present a poem based on one of the pieces of music. \n\nMusicians\nAlicia Lee\, Clarinet\nJeannie Yu\, Piano\nDavid Perry\, Violin\nAllyson Fleck\, Viola\nMara McClain\, Cello \nSponsored by Sandy Zingler \nThe 2024 Season is sponsored by the Jean Berkenstock Family Fund and the Susan DeWitt Davie Legacy Fund.

SUMMARY:Dvořák and Brahms • Hope UCC\, Sturgeon Bay
DESCRIPTION:Dvořák and Brahms—two great 19th century composers who gave us splendid piano quintets. However\, the Dvořák Quintet is one you may not have heard before. He was 31 when he wrote it\, but then decided to revise it in 1887 at the height of his career. Unfortunately\, this version was not heard until 1922\, 18 years after Dvořák’s death. Here is a chance to savor this rare masterpiece coupled with one of Brahms’ best chamber works in the talented hands of pianist Jeannie Yu\, in collaboration with violinist David Perry and his fellow string players. \nQuintet No. 1 in A Major\, Op. 5 • Antonín Dvořák\nPiano and String Quartet \nQuintet in F Minor\, Op. 34 • Johannes Brahms\nPiano and String Quartet \nWrite On\, Door County poet David Clowers will present a poem based on one of the pieces of music. \n\nMusicians\nJeannie Yu\, Piano\nDavid Perry & Ann Palen\, Violin\nAllyson Fleck\, Viola\nMara McClain\, Cello \nSponsored by Sandy Zingler \nThe 2024 Season is sponsored by the Jean Berkenstock Family Fund and the Susan DeWitt Davie Legacy Fund.
