SUMMARY:Coffee Talk with Peter Conroy\, PhD: What is the Pop in Popular Music? Rock'n'Roll.
DESCRIPTION:Peter Conroy is Professor Emeritus of French at the University of Illinois\, Chicago. He taught there for 34 years and served as department chairman. He is a widely published literary scholar. \nHe and his wife Beverly have been seasonal residents of Door County since the mid 1980s. Before that\, they were tent campers in Peninsula State Park starting in the late 1960s. Currently they own a summer home in Fish Creek. \nBoth Peter and Beverly have been long time and loyal supporters of MidSummers Music. Last year Peter delivered a paper for MSM on “Music and Revolution” which dealt with classical music and the political context in which he was composed and performed. This year he is following up with a paper on more modern music entitled “What is the ‘Pop” in Popular Music? Rock’n’Roll.”

SUMMARY:The French Chamber Music Mystique - Salon
DESCRIPTION:Chamber music was hard to sell in 19th century Paris which was totally absorbed by opera\, but a few composers took a stand and stood out. Two of them were women\, Louise Farrenc\, the first female professor at the Paris Conservatory\, and Mélanie Bonis\, who disguised her gender by using the first name of Mel on her publications to sound like a man. Mel’s story will break your heart\, but her music will melt it\, and this all-French program as a whole will bring you into the intimate confines of the secret French chamber music societies that worked so hard to develop a rich genre in the shadows of the period’s over-blown operatic fixation. \nSuite en trio in E Minor\, Op. 59 – Mélanie Bonis (1858-1937)\nFlute\, Violin\, and Piano\nSérénade: Allegretto\nPastorale: Andantino\nScherzo \nTrio in E Minor\, Op. 45 – Louise Farrenc (1804-1875)\nFlute\, Cello\, and Piano\nAndante sostenuto; Allegro giocoso\nGrave\nVivace\nAllegro \nIntermission \nTrio No. 2 in E Minor\, Op. 92 – Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921)\nViolin\, Cello\, and Piano\nAllegro non troppo\nAllegretto\nAndante con moto\nGrazioso poco allegro\nAllegro non troppo \nSalon concerts offer an intimate\, in-home musical experience. We encourage guests to arrive between 6:00 and 6:30 PM to allow time for parking\, gathering\, and seating. The performance will begin at 7:00 PM. Following the performance\, guests are warmly invited to enjoy a reception and conversation with the musicians. \nParking might be limited depending on the venue. When necessary\, we offer shuttle services\, parking attendants\, or signage to assist you. If you need accessible parking\, please inform our staff in advance\, and we will do our best to accommodate you. \nReserve Tickets

92 – Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921)\nViolin\, Cello\, and Piano\nAllegro non troppo\nAllegretto\nAndante con moto\nGrazioso poco allegro\nAllegro non troppo \nReserve Tickets

SUMMARY:Haydn\, Mozart\, and Wranitzky
DESCRIPTION:A program of string music featuring winds – and a Symphony as a bonus! Haydn wrote his last 12 symphonies for London\, and “The Clock” is one of those. The impresario who commissioned him made chamber versions with Haydn’s permission. The program opens with Mozart’s Oboe Quartet – a tour de force and virtual concerto for the oboe. In between\, we feature a discovery – a composer from Moravia who came to Vienna. Born the same year as Mozart\, he was hugely successful both as composer and conductor (he conducted the premiere of Beethoven’s First Symphony). His Sextet for Flute\, Oboe and Strings is one of seven such works and shows the depths of what late 18th century Vienna got to enjoy. \nQuartet in F Major\, K. 370/368b – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)\nOboe\, Violin\, Viola\, and Cello\nAllegro\nAdagio\nRondo: Allegro\, ma non troppo \nSextet in E-flat Major – Paul Wranitzky (1756-1808)\nFlute\, Oboe\, Violin\, Two Violas\, and Cello\nAdagio; Allegro\nAndante\nPresto \nIntermission \nSymphony No. 101 in D Major (“The Clock”)\, Hob. 1/101 [Salomon arr.] – Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)\nFlute\, Two Violins\, Viola\, and Cello\nAdagio; Presto\nAndante\nMenuetto\nFinale vivace \nReserve Tickets
