DESCRIPTION:After her triumphant performances last season of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto\, Jeannie returns this season to offer Grieg’s magnificent romantic treasure. We’ve discovered a stunningly beautiful arrangement with string quartet that will feature Jeannie in all her radiance. Puccini’s hauntingly beautiful Crisantemi opens the program followed by Emilie Mayer’s G Minor String Quartet. Of the seven quartets she wrote\, it is the only one published in her lifetime. Each of our three works represents a different vision of France\, so we are going to sample different French wines that complement their paired musical work. D’Indy brings us a French postcard painted by harp\, flute\, and strings. Bordes uses flute (played by Heather Zinninger) and strings to transport us to the Basque region\, and Claude Debussy enchants us with an impressionistic vision straight from the Louvre with his evocative String Quartet. Sommelier Jay Hutchinson shares some of his favorite appellations for this special occasion at three of our four concerts in this program. \n\nOptional “Bastille Day Pairing Concert” – A tasting of three wines will be interpolated in the program. Sommelier Jay Hutchinson will offer verbal commentary on the wines\, explaining why they were selected and drawing connections to the music. Wines might be paired based on shared historical\, cultural\, regional\, or geographic connections\, or interpretive connections based on the style\, tone\, or timbre of a given composer or composition. DESCRIPTION:Engage your imagination in the magic of music by three greats: Schumann\, Haydn\, and Beethoven. Schumann’s “Fairy Tales” is written for the same combination as Mozart’s “Kegelstatt Trio” (clarinet\, viola\, and piano) and is one of Schumann’s final compositions. He thought listeners would find it “highly romantic.” Beethoven’s “Ghost” gets its name from the haunted sound of the piano’s soft tremolando that underlies parts of the slow movement. Haydn’s Trio in C Major is not so scary\, but its intensity and flair may leave you breathless. Written during his second visit to London\, it is one of his last and best trios in a genre he pretty much invented. Schumann’s “Fairy Tales” is written for the same combination as Mozart’s “Kegelstatt Trio” (clarinet\, viola\, and piano) and is one of Schumann’s final compositions. He thought listeners would find it “highly romantic.” Beethoven’s “Ghost” gets its name from the haunted sound of the piano’s soft tremolando that underlies parts of the slow movement. Haydn’s Trio in C Major is not so scary\, but its intensity and flair may leave you breathless. Written during his second visit to London\, it is one of his last and best trios in a genre he pretty much invented. SUMMARY:Mozart\, Mendelssohn\, and Magic • Opening Night\, Kress Pavilion\, Egg Harbor
DESCRIPTION:Mendelssohn was 16 when he wrote his Sextet for Piano and Strings. Mozart was 10 years older when he penned his 2nd Piano Quartet. Both composers wrote them to show off their own amazing piano virtuosity\, creating breath-taking masterpieces. We begin the program with a Phantasy for piano trio by Alice Verne-Bredt\, who gained recognition as a composer by entering this work in the Cobbett Chamber Music Contest in London. It is hauntingly beautiful.
