SUMMARY:Dvořák\, Bruch\, and Beethoven 7
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven authorized his publisher to arrange his 7th Symphony for String Quintet. In an age when the symphony orchestra was relatively rare\, a chamber arrangement improved the opportunity for sales. This intimate and profound glimpse into the heart of the work is revelatory. Dvořák’s Notturno and Bruch’s recently published Quintet provide provocative precursors for this concert of masterpieces. \nNotturno in B Major\, Op. 40 – Antonin Dvořák\nTwo Violins\, Viola\, Cello\, and Bass \nQuintet in A Minor\, Op. Posthumous – Max Bruch\nTwo Violins\, Two Violas\, and Cello \nSymphony No. 7 in A Major\, Op. 92 [Steiner\, arr.] – Ludwig van Beethoven\nTwo Violins\, Two Violas\, and Cello \nDavid Perry & Ann Palen\, Violins • Allyson Fleck & Oryann Tsaig\, Violas • Mara McClain\, Cello • Kris Saebo\, Bass \nDavid is sponsored by the Nancy T. & David A. SUMMARY:Mendelssohn Magic
DESCRIPTION:Mendelssohn’s 2nd Piano Trio is unsurpassed. The way he weaves a Bach chorale melody into the final movement is spellbinding and worth the ticket price alone. Two other trios\, each involving the flute of Heather Zinninger\, set the stage. Undine Smith Moore’s Suite is hauntingly evocative\, while Weber’s Flute Trio shows how much the Romantic Period is indebted to this German master. \nAfro American Suite – Undine Smith Moore\nFlute\, Cello\, and Piano \nTrio in G Minor\, Op. 63 – Carl Maria von Weber\nFlute\, Cello\, and Piano \nTrio No. 2 in C Minor\, Op. 66 – Felix Mendelssohn\nViolin\, Cello\, and Piano \nHeather Zinninger\, Flute • David Perry\, Violin • Mara McClain\, Cello • Jeannie Yu\, Piano \nHeather is sponsored by the Jean Berkenstock Family Fund. SUMMARY:David Perry\, Jeannie Yu—Chausson Concerto! • Labor Day Gala at Björklunden\, Baileys Harbor
DESCRIPTION:The Gala is presented in memory of long-time MM cheerleader and former board member/Vice President Judy Widen. \nOne of the most dramatic and rapturous works in the literature concludes our season. You will be swept away by Chausson’s surging and impulsive masterwork\, expertly and passionately realized by our soloists\, David Perry\, violin\, and Jeannie Yu\, piano\, framed by our string quartet including Ann Palen\, Dawn Wohn\, Sally Chisholm\, and Cole Randolph. It’s a unique work\, orchestral in concept and monumental in scope. Fellow Frenchman Théodore Dubois’s Quintet\, featuring oboist Lindsay Flowers\, sets the tone with gaiety and élan. You only have two chances to hear this program. We strongly suggest the Gala on Labor Day for all the festivities and fine food to celebrate another glorious season. \n\nOur gala is an opportunity to celebrate the power of music\, while also raising awareness and funds for MM. We believe that music has the power to bring people together and create positive change in the world\, and we hope that this event will inspire and uplift all who attend. SUMMARY:Beethoven Septet • Woodwalk Gallery\, Egg Harbor
DESCRIPTION:Immediately before he wrote his First Symphony\, Beethoven wrote this Septet as a prototype or practice run. He was so ready for the nine symphonies that followed that this Septet became his most popular piece during his lifetime. You could almost call it his Tenth Symphony. Thrill to the full symphonic sound of this work and the Ireland Sextet that precedes it. J.J. Koh (clarinet)\, Judith Farmer (bassoon)\, and Fritz Foss (horn) join our string section led so expertly by David Perry. John Ireland’s colorful and dramatic Sextet for Clarinet\, Horn\, and Strings\, probably inspired by the Beethoven\, is a neglected masterpiece. It’s romantic English charm and colorful and dramatic scoring will make you happy you’ve discovered it. \nSextet (1898) • John Ireland\nClarinet\, Horn\, and String Quartet \nSeptet in E-flat Major\, Op. 20 • Ludwig van Beethoven\nClarinet\, Bassoon\, Horn\, Violin\, Viola\, Cello\, and Bass \n\nMusicians\nJJ Koh\, Clarinet\nFritz Foss\, Horn\nJudith Farmer\, Bassoon\nDavid Perry & Ann Palen\, Violin\nSally Chisholm\, Viola\nCole Randolph\, Cello\nJeremy Attanaseo\, Bass \nSponsored by Sandy Zingler \nThe 2024 Season is sponsored by the Jean Berkenstock Family Fund and the Susan DeWitt Davie Legacy Fund.

Sakari Vanderveer is one of the leading female black composers of our time and an inspiring leader in bringing young children to embrace playing string instruments. Mel Bonis (who used the masculine form of her name to gain acceptance) fought great odds to become one of France’s esteemed composers alongside classmates Debussy and Gabriel Pierné. Nineteenth century Hungarian icon Ernst von Dohnanyi fled the Nazis and then the communists before emigrating to the U.S. A virtuoso pianist and composer\, his Sextet is poignant and exhilarating in its cosmopolitan alure. \nObsidian\, rippled moonlight\, gleams (2019) • Sakari Dixon Vanderveer\nPiano and String Quartet \nQuartet No. 2 in D Major\, Op. 124 • Mélanie Bonis\nPiano\, Violin\, Viola\, and Cello \nSextet in C Major\, Op. 37 (1935) • Ernst von Dohnányi\nClarinet\, Horn\, Violin\, Viola\, Cello\, and Piano \n\nMusicians\nJJ Koh\, Clarinet\nFritz Foss\, Horn\nJeannie Yu\, Piano\nDavid Perry & Ann Palen\, Violin\nAllyson Fleck\, Viola\nCole Randolph\, Cello \nSponsored by Michael Elkow \nThe Women’s Fund of Door County is a supporting sponsor for this program in acknowledgment of the women musicians performing. \nThe 2024 Season is sponsored by the Jean Berkenstock Family Fund and the Susan DeWitt Davie Legacy Fund.

SUMMARY:Romance and Rapture • Björklunden\, Baileys Harbor
DESCRIPTION:This program is inspiring\, heart-rending\, vivacious\, captivating\, and life-affirming. 37 (1935) • Ernst von Dohnányi\nClarinet\, Horn\, Violin\, Viola\, Cello\, and Piano \n\nMusicians\nJJ Koh\, Clarinet\nFritz Foss\, Horn\nJeannie Yu\, Piano\nDavid Perry & Ann Palen\, Violin\nAllyson Fleck\, Viola\nCole Randolph\, Cello \nSponsored by Karin & Scott Myers \nThe Women’s Fund of Door County is a supporting sponsor for this program in acknowledgment of the women musicians performing. \nThe 2024 Season is sponsored by the Jean Berkenstock Family Fund and the Susan DeWitt Davie Legacy Fund.

SUMMARY:David Perry\, Jeannie Yu—Chausson Concerto! • Hope UCC\, Sturgeon Bay
DESCRIPTION:One of the most dramatic and rapturous works in the literature concludes our season. \nQuintet in F Major (1905) • Théodore Dubois\nOboe\, Violin\, Viola\, Cello\, and Piano \nConcerto for Violin\, Piano\, and String Quartet\, Op. 21 • Ernest Chausson\nSolo Violin\, Solo Piano\, and String Quartet \nWrite On\, Door County poet Ed DiMaio will present a poem written inspired by music from this program. \nMusicians\nLindsay Flowers\, Oboe\nJeannie Yu\, Piano\nDavid Perry\, Ann Palen\, and Dawn Wohn\, Violin\nSally Chisholm\, Viola\nCole Randolph\, Cello \nSponsored by Sandy Zingler \nThe 2024 Season is sponsored by the Jean Berkenstock Family Fund and the Susan DeWitt Davie Legacy Fund.

SUMMARY:Bruch and Brahms • Hope UCC\, Sturgeon Bay
DESCRIPTION:When Brahms wrote his second string quintet\, he thought it was a perfect way to end his career (he later was coaxed into creating a few more by a wonderful clarinetist). It is powerful\, charming\, intense\, light-hearted\, and – especially in its Hungarian flavored finale – exuberant. When someone suggested that the famous Prater in Vienna\, a favorite amusement park of Brahms\, might have inspired the effervescent nature of this work\, Brahms replied\, “Yes\, and the delightful girls there\, too.” Bruch’s masterpiece is also a late work not published until after his death. This composer of the famous Scottish Fantasy and Violin Concerto excels once again in this deeply felt companion piece to the Brahms. A rare opportunity to hear both of these sumptuous romantic string masterpieces together. \nQuartet in D Major\, Op. 11\, No. 1 (1795) • Adalbert Gyrowetz\nFlute\, Violin\, Viola\, and Cello \nQuintet in E-flat Major (1918)\, Op. Posthumous • Max Bruch\nTwo Violins\, Two Violas\, and Cello \nQuintet No. 2 in G Major\, Op. 111 • Johannes Brahms\nTwo Violins\, Two Violas\, and Cello \nWrite On\, Door County poet Stephanie Trenchard will present a poem based on one of the pieces of music. \n\nMusicians\nHeather Zinninger\, Flute\nDavid Perry\, Suzanne Beia & Ann Palen\, Violin\nAllyson Fleck & Catherine Lynn\, Viola\nPaula Kosower\, Cello \nSponsored by Sandy Zingler \nThe 2024 Season is sponsored by the Jean Berkenstock Family Fund and the Susan DeWitt Davie Legacy Fund.
