November 2025
Dear Midsummer’s friends,
I suspect that you, like me, find music the most effective antidote to stress. When I was a young bride, we managed with a steady diet of jazz and pop music, punctuated by regular visits to the Chicago Symphony to revel in the grand drama of a Solti-led orchestra.
But then my parents introduced us to Midsummer’s Music, and we discovered the power of the intense beauty of chamber music. Jim’s exquisitely curated “playlist” was also a history lesson, the superb musicians were so close you could almost read the music along with them, and you would come to know them in the reception that followed. I never expected to hear this quality of performance in Door County; they set a high bar for musicians coming our way.
In a world where stress within and without abounds, I am so grateful for the luxurious intimacy of a Midsummer’s Music concert, the sense of fellowship among strangers, the magic of tension melting before such extraordinary music. I marvel at Jim and Jean Berkenstock’s founding vision that today is determined ambition to cast a wider net, leaping over generational divides to introduce the magic of chamber music to young people to enjoy as musicians and audience. The Griffon Quartet as strategy is pure genius; as an experience, is pure delight.
I am overcome with gratitude to all who have been a part of building this organization, many as volunteers. In a time where the news inevitably speaks to deep divides in our country, Midsummer’s Music builds community. Let us come together this Thanksgiving and get behind our stellar team to support their success.
There are myriad ways to ensure they have the resources to continue to build community: reach for cash or into your donor-advised fund or your IRA or appreciated stock. Your generosity will ensure that growing audiences of all ages enjoy the peace and solace and joy that flow from Midsummer’s chamber music. Kick it up another level and your bold giving will reveal Midsummer’s Music’s imagination for a better future for us all.
Be bold!
With gratitude,

Barbara Lawton
