Join us as the Griffon String Quartet helps set the tone for an event where wind, water, and music sail together.
As the Tall Ships glide into Sturgeon Bay, WI, bringing echoes of maritime history and the spirit of exploration, the Griffon String Quartet – named for the legendary 17th-century vessel Le Griffon – adds a stirring soundtrack to the festival. Like the ships themselves —majestic, precise, and full of story — the Quartet brings classical music to life with passion and grace.
The acclaimed Quartet joins forces with the string musicians of Midsummer’s Music to present two unforgettable concerts on August 1 and 2, coinciding with Door County’s Tall Ships festival. The program features two breathtaking String Octets – one by Carl Schuberth and the other by Max Bruch – alongside a moving homage to Pope John Paul II by the esteemed Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki.
An affiliate of Midsummer’s Music, the Griffon String Quartet is a professional group that is deeply embedded in the community through several impactful programs:
- The Einstein Series, offering engaging, interactive music education for school-age children in northeast Wisconsin.
- B Double Sharp, which brings intimate, uplifting miniconcerts to aging adults, people with disabilities, and their caregivers.
- Community-Embedded programs, designed to be inclusive for families and to build appreciation for chamber music through hands-on experiences and accessible performances.
These concerts not only highlight exceptional classical repertoire but also celebrate the Quartet’s ongoing mission to connect, educate, and inspire through music.
The ensemble features David Perry, Roy Meyer, Alex Norris, and Ann Palen on violin; Allyson Fleck and Oryann Tsaig on viola; Mara McClain and Jesse Nummelin on cello; and Kris Saebo on bass—each bringing depth, virtuosity, and passion to this unique program.

The Majesty of Schubert’s Octet
Schubert’s Octet was inspired by Beethoven’s Septet, which was immensely popular. Schubert adds a second violin to the ensemble. It is his chamber music answer to the Great C-Major Symphony—a masterpiece of immense proportions. Gernot Wolfgang joins us to introduce his “Impressions,” which are suggestive of imaginary paintings, “Carnival of Venice,” “Dream,” and “Country Road.” Wolfgang, a Grammy-nominated composer, also uses the same instrumentation – clarinet, bassoon, horn, violins, viola, cello, and bass – as the Beethoven Septet in his energetic, novel, and delightful addition to this illustrious repertoire.
